MONETIZATION

AION 2 Monetization Explained: Free-to-Play Base, $15/Month Marketplace Subscription, and the Korean P2W Lesson

With the Launch Scale Test concluded and the October 5 global launch two weeks away, understanding AION 2's monetization model is essential for players deciding how to engage. The game is free-to-play with full access to story, open world, dungeons, flying, and PvP — but participating in the player-driven economy requires a $15/month subscription. Here is the complete breakdown.

01

What You Get for Free

AION 2's base game is completely free. This includes the full story campaign, open world exploration, the signature aerial flight system, all dungeons, PvP battlegrounds, and the Abyss Rift Zone. There is no level cap restriction or content gating behind a paywall.

All eight launch classes are available without payment. Character creation, customization, and progression through the level cap are entirely free. The game does not restrict combat abilities, quest access, or zone exploration behind any payment tier.

This is a genuine free-to-play model in the sense that you can experience the entire game without spending money — as long as you are comfortable earning all equipment through gameplay rather than trading.

02

The $15/Month Marketplace Subscription

The subscription — referred to as a 'Special Quai Membership' — costs $15 per month and unlocks access to the player-driven auction house and the Kinah/Quna currency exchange. Without it, you cannot buy or sell items to other players through the marketplace.

This is the core monetization mechanism. The subscription does not provide combat advantages, experience boosts, or exclusive gear. It purely enables participation in the player economy. Subscribers also gain access to an exclusive vendor with unspecified additional benefits.

Players who decline the subscription must craft all equipment themselves or earn it through drops and quests. This is viable for solo-oriented players but puts dedicated traders at an advantage.

03

Cash Shop: Cosmetics and Consumables Only

The cash shop sells cosmetics and consumables that NCsoft states have no effect on progression. Direct combat upgrades are not available for purchase. This represents a shift from the Korean launch, where stat-boosting bundles were initially sold.

The premium Daeva Pass track contains enhancement resources, though its Western pricing remains undisclosed. Founder's Pack buyers receive a one-month complimentary membership and exclusive cosmetic items, but no combat advantages.

The Daeva Pass is a seasonal battle pass system. Free track rewards are available to all players; the premium track offers additional cosmetic and enhancement resources for paying subscribers.

The Korean P2W Controversy: A Cautionary Tale

When AION 2 launched on the Korean server in 2025, NCsoft initially sold bundles that provided direct bonuses to combat stats. The community backlash was immediate and severe. NCsoft's stock price dropped more than 15% within days.

The offending items were removed approximately 15 hours after launch and NCsoft issued a public apology. The company subsequently restructured the Korean cash shop to remove all pay-to-win elements, establishing the cosmetics-only model that the global launch now follows.

This history is significant because it demonstrates that NCsoft has been burned by P2W monetization and has strong financial incentive to avoid repeating the mistake in the global market. The Western cash shop model is directly shaped by this experience.

05

Should You Subscribe?

For players who enjoy trading, crafting economies, and market speculation, the $15/month subscription is likely worth it. Access to the auction house enables efficient gear acquisition and Kinah/Quna exchange provides a legitimate way to convert between currencies.

For solo players or those who prefer earning everything through gameplay, the subscription is optional. You can enjoy the full game without it, though you will need to be more self-sufficient for equipment.

For PvP enthusiasts, TimeSaver.gg recommends waiting a few weeks after launch to observe the live cash shop before committing. The Korean precedent suggests NCsoft will be cautious about P2W, but the Western market may reveal new pressures. The free-to-play base game provides full PvP access regardless of subscription status.
