AION 2 on Unreal Engine 5: World Scale, Graphics, and What It Means for Players

One of the most ambitious aspects of AION 2 is its technology. NCSoft chose Unreal Engine 5 for the sequel, marking a departure from the proprietary engine used in the original AION. The result is a world 36 times larger than the original game, with modern rendering features including Lumen global illumination and Nanite virtualized geometry. Here's what players need to know about the technology behind AION 2.

01

Why Unreal Engine 5?

NCSoft's decision to use Unreal Engine 5 for AION 2 is a strategic shift. The original AION used NCSoft's proprietary CryEngine-based engine, which served well for its time but lacked modern features like real-time global illumination and virtualized geometry. UE5 provides these out of the box.

UE5 also gives NCSoft access to a mature ecosystem of development tools, community plugins, and optimization pipelines. This should result in faster content updates and better long-term maintenance compared to a proprietary engine.

02

36x larger world than original AION

NCSoft has stated that AION 2's world is 36 times larger than the original AION. This doesn't simply mean more empty terrain — the world includes multiple continents, distinct biomes, dungeons, and open-world content zones that players can traverse seamlessly.

The scale has direct gameplay implications: travel between regions requires planning, mounts and fast-travel systems are essential, and exploration is a core activity rather than an afterthought. The interactive map on this site helps you navigate this vast world.

03

Lumen, Nanite, and visual quality

AION 2 leverages UE5's Lumen global illumination for realistic real-time lighting. This means indoor/outdoor transitions, day/night cycles, and dynamic weather all feature natural lighting changes without baked lightmaps. Nanite virtualized geometry allows for incredibly detailed environments without the performance cost of traditional high-poly meshes.

The visual result is immediately noticeable: character models, environments, and effects look significantly more detailed than the original AION or competing MMORPGs on older engines. NCSoft's art direction combines realism with stylized character designs reminiscent of AION's signature aesthetic.

04

Performance and system requirements

UE5's advanced features come with hardware demands. NCSoft has confirmed that AION 2 will run on a range of hardware configurations, but players wanting the full visual experience will need a modern GPU. Check our system requirements guide for detailed specs.

The game supports DLSS and FSR upscaling technologies to help maintain performance on mid-range hardware. NCSoft has also implemented custom optimization for large-scale PvP scenarios, where many players on screen can strain even high-end systems.
