AION 2 Raid Boss Split-and-Merge Design: How 10 Players Become Two Groups of Five
MMORPG.com's Gamescom demo highlighted raid design as one of AION 2's most distinctive features. The 10-player raid splits into two groups of five mid-fight, each tackling a separate boss before reuniting for the final encounter. Combined with the franchise's aerial PVE identity, the split/merge structure keeps every moment compact and demanding.

Raid Structure: 10 Players, 5-Player Dungeons
Raids in AION 2 support 10 players; dungeons support 5. This creates a natural scaling path — 5-player dungeons prepare groups for the 10-player raid structure.
The raid begins with all 10 players fighting together. This opening phase establishes coordination before the group splits.
Dungeons at 5 align with the raid's split phase, making dungeon runs a natural rehearsal for half of the raid encounter.
The Split Mechanic: Two Groups, Two Bosses
Mid-encounter, the 10-player group splits into two parties of five. Each group simultaneously tackles a different boss.
This split is not optional — it is a structural feature of the raid. Both groups must succeed to advance.
The simultaneous dual-boss phase is what MMORPG.com called a 'unique twist' and what the team appears to want repeated across future raid tiers.
Reuniting for the Final Boss
Both groups converge for the final boss encounter. All 10 players must coordinate as one unit for the raid's climax.
The final boss appears to reward the full group's combined effort — a payoff for surviving both split-phase fights.
Wing-based aerial mechanics remain integral, serving both defensive dodges and offensive bursts during the final phase.
Group Composition: Trinity That Travels
The original AION's class design carried over the classic Tank / DPS / Heals trinity. Both 5-player split groups should mirror this structure.
Each group of five needs at least one tank, one healer, and the rest DPS — the raid splits not by class but by trinity-representative units.
This design keeps groups small enough to execute the aerial PVE that defines the franchise while still offering the scale of a traditional 10-player raid.
Preparation: What to Do Before the Split
Before the split, groups should align on boss priority — which group takes which boss should be decided pre-encounter, not mid-fight.
Communication tools (voice, ping system) are critical: the split phase separates both players and audio channels in many setups.
Dungeon runs at 5 are the primary way to test team cohesion. Groups that can clear a 5-player dungeon together are structurally ready for the raid's split phase.
